The multiple use of the laser pointer has made it dearer to us. But we must not forget the other side of it. Though it is used in different sectors, it has some hazards, which we must not forget. If we start with the eyesight of a person, the laser beam causes distraction. Therefore, laser pointer should not be projected directly to the eyes of any animals. Especially, the laser pointer caused more ditractin for the drivers of the vehicles.

The next important thing we must monition here that higher output of the laser pointer may cause damage to the retina. Therefore the output of the laser pointer has been limited between 1 to 5 mw.  Class 2 and 3 laser pointer can damage the retina extensively. Some suggest that one may use spectacle to avoid damage of eyes caused by laser pointers having output 5 mw.  According to FDA (Food and Drug Administration) the 3a lasers can damage the retina if it used for more than .25 second without blinking.

A misuse of the laser pointer is not unknown. In the last decade of the last century the laser pointer has become a nuisance. The adolescents commonly used it; especially in the theater halls such laser beams pop up on the screen causing irritation. Some time terrorists use it. In the year 2004, a person was put behind bar who was supposedly involved in terrorist activities while pointing a powerful green laser towards an airplane.  In some of the countries, we find legal limitation of producing lasers with limited output.

Countries like UK, USA, and Australia one cannot produce laser with higher output. But in other countries there is no such limitation.  China and Hong Kong now produce laser pointers with higher output. Such laser pointers are purchased by peoples from all over the world via Internet. Such high-powered pointer is dangerous for national safety. FDA has repeatedly passed warning against using such laser pointer for common use.
